differential pressure, temperature, vacuum and large level switches have been certified as Intrinsically Safe (IS), which prevents potentially explosive gases or dust from igniting. The IS rating is part of the ATEX Directive (94/9/EC).
Intrinsic Safety is a means of preventing explosions, which could be caused due to sparking of an electrical current in hazardous areas. Hazardous Areas are those areas of a plant or facility that have a likely presence of explosive mixtures of gas, vapor or dust according to SOR Engineer, Sara Roos.
IS provides a preventative method versus flameproof equipment where the explosion is contained and not transmitted outside of the product. SOR also carries ATEX approved flameproof products.
